Phil Barry - In hopes of becoming a member of the Oregon Club Board, I would like to take an opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and my loyalty to University of Oregon Athletics.
I am born and raised in Oregon and have lived in Eugene for over 45 years. I attended Marist Catholic High School and was a 3 sport athlete with honors in both athletics and academics. I have always loved sports and competition. My father began to taking me to Oregon Football and Men’s Basketball games when I was 8 years old. My old memories of Autzen are much different than my current memories. When I was younger you could sit wherever you wanted and my favorite thing to do was collect Duck cups. Now I am blessed to witness a football program on the cusp of a Pac-12 and/or national championship every year. How far we have come and how awesome the perspective is for me and many others old enough to remember.
When it comes to Basketball I have my best memories. MacArthur Court was special. I can still smell the popcorn and the wood bleachers. I can still feel the shaking of the floor and hear the enormous roar of the crowd. From the days of Coach Monson and players like Anthony Taylor, Keith Renoylds, Brandon Taylor, The Two Luke’s and Aaron Brooks. My favorite memory was the Ducks beating Gary Payton and OSU on a last second put back and watching the crowd take over the floor. I always wanted to play at Mac Court. As luck would have it I got my opportunity to play twice when my intermural team made it to the championship game back to back years and won. I was blessed with taking and making the game winning shot in both games. Pretty much a dream come true without the screaming fans.
Over the more recent years I have expanded my events to attend Baseball, Softball, Track and Field and Women’s Basketball events along with the Men’s Basketball and Football events. I have recently purchased season tickets for the upcoming Football season and look forward to continuing to be a season ticket holder until I die.
I wanted to join the Oregon Club because I have never been more interested in Oregon Athletics. At my age things are more manageable when it comes to time and would like to dedicate my time to an organization that works side by side with the Oregon athletic teams that I admire and draw so many good memories from. I more recently became interested in becoming a board member when I recognized other people that I know either being a member of the board or president.
I would like the opportunity to be a board member and I am confident I would be a great addition to the team. Thank you for your time and consideration.
